Design Challenge

REI’s focus is to get people to opt outside. The team wanted to leverage technology to enhance the outdoor experience. The challenge was to come up with an idea where technology played a supportive role, but not distract or take away from our experience with nature.

Proposed solution

The REI team came up with an app idea where you could create or join outdoor events and meetups. Other features included ways to explore new adventure spots and to find friends in the REI community that had similar interests. I was brought onto the team to collaborate on the product design and bring the idea to life. I was given 24 hours to create mockup app screens for the team to share with customers and get feedback on their new idea.

Feedback & Learnings

The REI team was ecstatic with the quick turnaround and generally got good feedback from the customer interviews. There were still a lot of factors to think through regarding privacy and safety, but the team was able to validate their idea within two days of collaboration.
